Tile Cleaner Guide: Removing Grime, Grease and Limescale

Written by the Alkemico cleaning team in Korangi · Last updated September 2026

Kitchen tiles, bathroom tiles and floor tiles all pick up dirt differently — cooking grease behind the stove isn't the same problem as limescale in the shower, and treating them the same way is why a lot of tile cleaning falls short.

We don't sell a dedicated tile cleaner yet, so this is the honest, tile-by-tile method that actually works.

What Actually Makes a Good Tile Cleaner?

Tiles aren't one surface. A kitchen wall tile deals with cooking grease, a bathroom floor tile deals with hard water and soap scum, and the grout between both holds dirt differently than the tile itself. A cleaner that's genuinely good at tiles has to handle that range, not just one of those problems.

What to Use for Everyday Tile Cleaning

Surfaco is our general surface cleaner, and it's the closest thing we make to a tile cleaner.

  • Handles kitchen wall tile grease and everyday floor tile grime in one bottle.
  • Ready to use straight from the bottle — spray, work it in, wipe.
  • Not a dedicated grout specialist — a stubborn grout stain needs a brush and extra time.

Why We Don't Recommend Acidlt for Tiles

Acidlt is a strong, acid-based toilet cleaner — not a tile or grout product, and we'd rather say that plainly than let it be assumed.

  • Built and tested for toilet bowl limescale specifically, not tile or grout surfaces.
  • A strong acid cleaner can damage grout and tile finish with repeated use over time.
  • For bathroom tile limescale, use a cleaner aimed at mineral buildup, not an acid toilet cleaner.

How to Clean Kitchen, Bathroom and Floor Tiles

The same five steps apply across the house — what changes is which cleaner you reach for at step two.

  1. Sweep or dry-mop before anything wet Dust and grit go straight into a wet mop otherwise, and a dry-first pass stops loose dirt from turning into a gritty paste that dulls the tile surface over repeated cleans.
  2. Match the cleaner to the tile, not just the room A kitchen wall tile with cooking grease needs a degreasing surface cleaner. A bathroom floor tile with hard water spots needs something aimed at mineral buildup. One all-purpose spray rarely does both jobs equally well.
  3. Work the grout lines separately Grout is more porous than the tile itself, which is why it discolours and holds mould faster. Use an old toothbrush or grout brush on the lines specifically, rather than expecting a flat mop or cloth to reach into them.
  4. Let the cleaner sit before wiping or rinsing A quick spray-and-wipe barely touches hard water spots or set-in grease. A few minutes of contact time before you wipe makes the difference between a streaky pass and a genuinely clean tile.
  5. Dry the surface once you're done Standing water left on tiles, especially in a bathroom, is exactly what feeds the mould and mildew that shows up in grout lines again within days. A quick dry pass with a cloth or squeegee closes that loop.

Common Tile Problems and What Actually Works

The six tile problems we hear about most, each with the one thing that matters most for that spot.

Kitchen Grease & Cooking Splatter

The most common tile problem in Karachi kitchens, especially wall tiles behind the stove. A degreasing surface cleaner worked in with a cloth lifts it far better than water alone.

Limescale & Hard Water Spots

Tanker and groundwater leave a chalky white buildup on bathroom floor and wall tiles over time. It needs a cleaner aimed at mineral deposits, not a general spray, and a few minutes of contact time before wiping.

Soap Scum on Shower Tiles

The dull, slightly greasy film that builds up in a shower area is a mix of soap residue and hard water minerals. It responds better to a proper scrub with a grout brush than a quick wipe-down.

Grout Discolouration & Mould

Karachi's humidity, especially through the monsoon months, speeds up mould growth in grout lines. Catching it early with a dedicated grout brush stops it from setting in permanently.

Dull, Cloudy Floor Tiles

Tiles that look clean but never quite shine usually have a thin layer of old cleaner residue or hard water film built up over many mops. A proper rinse pass, not just another round of cleaner, usually fixes it.

Everyday Dust & Construction Grit

With ongoing construction in a lot of Karachi neighbourhoods, floor tiles pick up fine dust daily. A dry sweep before mopping matters more here than in most cities.

Why Karachi Tiles Get Dirty Faster Than Most

Between tanker and groundwater's mineral content, ongoing construction dust in a lot of neighbourhoods, and monsoon humidity that feeds grout mould, tiles here pick up grime on more fronts than they would in a city on softer municipal water and less construction traffic.

  • Tanker water leaves limescale on bathroom tiles faster than in cities on softer supply.
  • Construction dust across Karachi means floor tiles need a dry sweep more often, not less.
  • Monsoon humidity speeds up grout mould, so catching it early actually matters here.

Do We Sell a Tile Cleaner? Not Yet.

We formulate 8 cleaning products ourselves in Korangi, and a dedicated tile-and-grout cleaner isn't one of them yet. Surfaco is the closest thing we make — it handles everyday kitchen and floor tile grime well. We don't recommend our acid-based Acidlt for general tile or grout cleaning; it's built and tested for toilet bowls specifically, and using a strong acid cleaner on tile or grout can damage the finish over time.

  • "Tile cleaner" is one of the fastest-growing cleaning searches we track — enough that it's genuinely on our radar.
  • If you'd want an Alkemico tile and grout cleaner built for local water and dust, tell us on WhatsApp.
  • We'd rather say this honestly than recommend a product for a job it isn't built for.

Tile Cleaning Questions

There isn't one product that's ideal for every tile problem — kitchen grease, bathroom limescale and floor dullness respond to different approaches, covered above. For everyday tile cleaning across the house, our own Surfaco surface cleaner handles most of it in one bottle, since it's already formulated for tiles alongside counters and tables.

Spray a degreasing surface cleaner directly onto the tile and let it sit for a minute or two before wiping — cooking splatter that's been baked on by stove heat rarely lifts with a single quick wipe. Our own Surfaco is formulated for exactly this kind of everyday kitchen grease.

Limescale needs a cleaner aimed at mineral deposits and a few minutes of contact time before wiping, rather than a quick spray and pass. We don't recommend using an acid-based toilet cleaner like Acidlt on general bathroom tiles or grout — it's built and tested for toilet bowls specifically, and a strong acid cleaner can damage grout and tile finish over time.

Yes — Surfaco is formulated for counters, tables and tiles together, so it covers everyday kitchen and floor tile cleaning well. It's a general surface cleaner rather than a dedicated tile-and-grout specialist, so a stubborn, set-in grout stain may need a more targeted approach like a grout brush and some extra contact time.

Catching it early matters more than the product — mould in grout spreads fast in Karachi's humidity, especially during monsoon. Scrub the grout lines specifically with an old toothbrush or grout brush rather than relying on a flat mop or cloth, and dry the area fully afterward so it doesn't come straight back.

Not yet — "tile cleaner" is one of the fastest-growing cleaning searches we track, so it's genuinely something we're considering. In the meantime, Surfaco covers most everyday tile cleaning. If you'd want a dedicated Alkemico tile and grout cleaner, message us on WhatsApp and let us know.
