Solar Panel Cleaning Solution: Does Your Home Need One?
Written by the Alkemico cleaning team in Korangi · Last updated September 2026
More Karachi rooftops have solar panels on them every year, mostly to get ahead of load-shedding — but a panel covered in dust doesn't produce what it should, and not everyone needs a special solution to fix that.
We don't make a dedicated solar panel cleaning solution yet, so here's the honest answer on whether you actually need one, or if plain water will do.
What's Actually in a Proper Solar Panel Cleaning Solution?
A genuine solar panel cleaning solution is built around deionized or soft water and a mild, non-abrasive surfactant — the same basic idea as a car wash shampoo, but formulated specifically to leave zero residue on photovoltaic glass, since any film left behind blocks light and defeats the whole point of cleaning.
Two things separate it from a general household cleaner: it's UV-stable so it doesn't break down and streak under direct sun, and it's anti-static, which slows how fast dust resettles on the panel afterward. A general surface cleaner like our own Surfaco is built for counters and tiles, not either of those two jobs, which is why we don't recommend it on solar glass.
How to Clean Solar Panels Safely Without Damaging Them
Timing and technique matter more than what you clean with. Get either wrong and you risk cracking the glass or scratching the coating.
- Clean early morning or evening, never at midday Cold water on hot glass can crack a panel, and Karachi's rooftops get hot enough by mid-morning that this is a real risk, not a theoretical one. Early morning, before the sun is strong, is the safest window.
- Rinse with plain water first A hose or a bucket of plain water clears most of the loose dust that settles daily on a rooftop. This alone recovers a meaningful chunk of lost output on panels that haven't been touched in weeks.
- Use a soft brush or microfibre cloth, never anything abrasive A stiff brush, scouring pad or anything with grit in it can scratch the glass coating and permanently reduce how much light the panel lets through. A soft brush or microfibre cloth on a long handle is enough for the film that plain water doesn't lift.
- Only add a cleaning solution for stubborn film or bird droppings Plain water handles ordinary dust. A proper solar panel cleaning solution, applied sparingly, is for the baked-on film, bird droppings or salt residue near the coast that plain water alone won't shift.
- Rinse off any solution fully and let it air-dry Any residue left on the glass can attract more dust and partially block light, which defeats the point of cleaning in the first place. A full final rinse before it dries in the sun avoids that.
Why Karachi Rooftops Lose Solar Output Faster Than Most
Road dust, nearby construction and long dry stretches between rains mean a rooftop in Karachi collects a heavier film than one in a wetter climate, where rain does a lot of the cleaning for free. Homes near Korangi Industrial Area or along dustier arterial roads see this build up faster still, and coastal humidity can bake that dust into a harder film if it sits too long.
- Dust settles on rooftops daily during dry months, not just occasionally.
- Panels near industrial areas or busy roads need more frequent checks than ones in quieter neighbourhoods.
- Monsoon rain does a fair amount of the cleaning naturally, so a heavier manual clean matters most right before and after the dry season.
Does Your Home Actually Need One?
Answer these honestly before buying anything — most homes can skip the solution entirely.
Has Output Visibly Dropped?
If your inverter app or bill shows a noticeable dip with no other explanation, dust buildup is one of the most common and cheapest-to-fix causes — try a plain water rinse before assuming you need a solution.
Has It Been Weeks Since Any Rain?
A long dry spell is exactly when dust turns from loose film into something plain water struggles to fully lift — this is the situation a dedicated solution is actually for.
Bird Droppings or Sticky Residue?
These don't rinse off with water alone and can shade individual cells, which drags down the whole panel's output — this is the clearest case for a proper solution.
Close to the Coast or a Busy Road?
Salt air and heavier traffic grime both bake onto glass faster than ordinary rooftop dust, so homes in these spots typically need a solution more often than ones in quieter inland areas.
Do We Sell a Solar Panel Cleaning Solution? Not Yet.
We formulate 8 cleaning products ourselves in Korangi, and a dedicated solar panel cleaning solution isn't one of them yet. We'd rather say that plainly than stretch Surfaco or any other household product to cover something it wasn't tested for.
- "Solar panel cleaning solution" is a small but fast-growing search term as more Karachi homes go solar — enough that it's genuinely on our radar.
- If you'd want an Alkemico solution built for local dust and hard water, tell us on WhatsApp.
- We'd rather say this honestly than list a product we don't actually make yet.

Solar Panel Cleaning Questions
Yes — more than in a lot of cities. Karachi's dust, combined with long dry stretches between rains for much of the year, lets a fine film build up on rooftop panels that plain wind or an occasional light drizzle doesn't clear on its own. Output loss from dust buildup is one of the most common, and most fixable, reasons a solar setup underperforms its expected output.
Plain water handles ordinary daily dust and is genuinely enough most of the time — that's the honest answer, not a sales pitch. A dedicated solution is for the harder cases: baked-on film after a long dry spell, bird droppings, or salt residue if you're closer to the coast, where water alone won't fully lift it.
It can, and we'd rather say that plainly. Many household surface cleaners contain ingredients that leave a residue or can degrade the anti-reflective coating on solar glass over repeated use — our own Surfaco page is built and tested for household surfaces, not solar glass, so we don't recommend it here. A cleaning solution formulated specifically for solar panels, or plain water, is the safer route.
Roughly once a month during the dustier, drier months is a reasonable baseline for most rooftops, and less often right after monsoon rains have done some of the work naturally. If your home is near a construction site or a dustier arterial road, checking output and cleaning more frequently makes sense.
Ground-level or easily accessible rooftop panels are generally fine to clean yourself with the steps above. For a steep roof, a hard-to-reach installation, or a large commercial array, it's worth having a professional installer or cleaning service handle it — the panels themselves are durable, but a fall from a Karachi rooftop isn't a risk worth taking to save a cleaning fee.
Not yet — it's on our radar as rooftop solar becomes more common across Karachi, and "solar panel cleaning solution" is one of the faster-growing terms we track even though search volume is still small today. If you'd want an Alkemico solution formulated for local dust and hard water, message us on WhatsApp and let us know — that interest is exactly what would move it up the list.
