Glass Cleaner: How to Get Streak-Free Windows and Mirrors

Written by the Alkemico cleaning team in Korangi · Last updated September 2026

Karachi's dust and hard tanker water make windows and mirrors streak faster than most places, and most of the "fixes" people try — newspaper, plain water, whatever's under the sink — make it worse, not better.

We don't make a dedicated glass cleaner yet, so this is the honest method that actually works, not a pitch for one of our own bottles.

What Makes Glass Cleaner Different From a Regular Surface Cleaner?

A glass cleaner is formulated to evaporate cleanly, without leaving the faint residue that a counter or tile cleaner is designed to leave behind for a lasting clean feel. That residue is invisible on a kitchen counter but shows up immediately on glass as streaks once daylight or a bulb hits it at an angle.

It's a narrow, single-purpose product, which is partly why it isn't one of our 8 SKUs yet — our own Surfaco page is upfront that a dedicated glass cleaner beats it on glass specifically, even though Surfaco handles everything else in the house.

How to Clean Windows and Mirrors Without Streaks

The order matters more than the product. Skip a step and the streaks come back within a day.

  1. Dust the glass dry first Wipe the window or mirror dry with a microfibre cloth before adding any liquid. Karachi's dust and construction grit turn into a gritty paste the moment they meet a wet cloth, which is what causes fine scratch marks over time.
  2. Spray a proper glass cleaner, not water alone A dedicated glass cleaner is formulated to evaporate cleanly without a residue. Plain water, or a general surface cleaner meant for counters and tiles, tends to leave a faint film that shows up as streaks once the light hits it.
  3. Wipe in one direction, not circles Circular wiping is the single biggest cause of visible streaks. Work top to bottom in straight, slightly overlapping strokes with a clean microfibre cloth, not a paper towel or old newspaper.
  4. Buff dry with a second, dry cloth Go over the same glass immediately with a dry microfibre cloth while it's still slightly damp. This is the step most people skip, and it's usually why the same window looks streaky again within a day.
  5. Do hard water spots as a separate step Tanker and groundwater spots don't come off with a normal wipe-down — they need a few minutes of contact time before wiping, not a quick spray and pass.

Why Karachi Windows and Mirrors Streak Faster Than Most

Between road dust, nearby construction and the mineral content in tanker and groundwater, glass here picks up grime and spotting faster than it would in a city on softer municipal supply. Humidity during the monsoon months makes any leftover residue show up even more.

  • Dust settles on glass daily, not weekly, so a dry wipe first genuinely matters here.
  • Hard water spots from tanker deliveries need the extra dwell time step above.
  • Monsoon humidity means a proper dry buff matters more than in drier cities.

Do We Sell a Glass Cleaner? Not Yet.

We formulate 8 cleaning products ourselves in Korangi, and a dedicated glass cleaner isn't one of them yet. In a pinch, Surfaco will clean glass — it just won't leave the same invisible, streak-free finish a purpose-built glass cleaner does.

  • "Glass cleaner" is one of the most-searched cleaning terms we see — enough that it's genuinely on our radar.
  • If you'd want an Alkemico glass cleaner built for local dust and hard water, tell us on WhatsApp.
  • We'd rather say this honestly than list a product we don't actually make yet.

Glass Cleaning Questions

A dedicated glass cleaner formulated to evaporate without residue, used with a microfibre cloth rather than a paper towel or newspaper. General surface cleaners and dish soap both leave a faint film on glass that shows up as streaks once sunlight hits it, even though they work fine on counters and tiles.

Diluted white vinegar can cut through light grime and is a reasonable emergency fix, but it doesn't handle Karachi's harder water spots as well as a proper glass cleaner, and the smell lingers longer than most people expect. It's a fine backup, not a daily solution if you're cleaning windows often.

Not really, and it can make things worse. Newspaper ink can smear onto glass and window frames, and the paper itself can leave fine scratches over repeated use. A clean, dry microfibre cloth does the same lint-free job without either risk.

Let the cleaner sit on the spot for a couple of minutes before wiping, rather than spraying and wiping immediately — hard water mineral deposits need that extra contact time to loosen. For spots that have been there a long time, you may need to repeat the step once.

You can, but don't expect the same finish. Our own Surfaco page is upfront about this: it's built for counters, tables and tiles, and a dedicated glass cleaner will leave a streak-free finish that a general surface cleaner usually can't match. It'll clean the glass, just not invisibly.

Not yet — it's genuinely something we're considering based on how often people ask, since "glass cleaner" is one of the most-searched cleaning terms we see. If you'd want an Alkemico glass cleaner formulated for Karachi's dust and hard water, message us on WhatsApp and let us know — that interest is exactly what would move it up the list.
